Averill Woods neighbors say LPD drove by and ignored disturbance

A NOTE:

Melissa Quon-Huber, a leader of the Averill Woods Neighborhood Association sent this e-mail about Monday night’s disturbance at Averill School, a site of a violent gather at the same location earlier in the summer.

She says neighbors saw police drive right by the disturbance without stopping with contradicts an account from a LPD contact. She says the neighborhood association will file a complaint against the police department.

I wanted to update you on what Averill neighbors actually experienced and observed this Monday 8/4 when the police were called for another fight.

“One police car arrived shortly after I spoke with you and all the individuals were still there. Once the car arrived they began to flee. The police car drove did not stop drove down Averill and left. We were extremely disappointed and angry. They literally drove through the individuals and cars that were parked on the street and we did not see them go on school property. On a positive note they left and there was no gun fire but there was no attempt to arrest anyone, they never got out of the police car.

It is reprehensible that they are saying no one was there when they arrived!!!!!!!!! There were at least 30 people and 10 cars!!! I was unable to get any plate # and did not want to go outside and try.”

Note that it is quite contradictory to what we heard from the Lansing Police Department and the update that I sent below.

“We heard back from the LPD Sergeant that they were unable to apprehend anyone tonight. By the time the police arrived those involved had fled.”

Note that this is also consistent with what was reported in this weeks’ City Pulse about tepid police response to neighbors concerns in REO town. Like our neighbors, the REO folks have taken video cameras to document what has been happening.

We will be filing a formal complaint. If anyone else has anything else to add please let me know.

Thanks,
Melissa

I think getting our camcorders out is a great idea. I have lived in this neighborhood for 10+ years and I think it is time to start holding folks accountable. I’d like to be able to go for a walk alone at night but am afraid, because I know if I have to call 911 it will take them one hour to get here. Thank you for standing up. I hope the neighborhood will organize and be a safe living area again.
