Our neighborhood–Averill Woods–on the southwest side of Lansing, MI didn’t let a soft off-and-on rain stop their block party last night. More than 100 persons from our inner-city residential enclave took the time to eat hot dogs provided and cooked by the Lansing Police Department and more importantly got to know and cemented relationships with each other.
The event was held inside the gym at Averill Elementary School which has become a focus of community activism and interest.
The police department turned out in force with fun equipment to look at including an armored-personnel carrier from their special tactics unit. There was also a huge bouncing toy from the city’s parks and recreation department.
Special guests included Mayor Virg Bernero and City Council members A’Lynne Robinson and Kathie Dunbar.
These videos taken with a small Flip video camera give a small taste of a good neighborhood evening.
