A short street in southwest Lansing-Starlight Lane-where residents enjoy the relaxed pace on the road have been inundated by diverted speeding traffic diverted from Waverly Road. And residents are looking for help from city officials to find a solution.
The city of Lansing has pulled the plug on their agreement to implement temporary barriers to through traffic in and out of Waverly Road. Instead, according to Lansing City Council-member A’Lynne Robinson, the city has switched gears and started to construct sidewalks with curb and gutter for a portion of Starlight.
This frustration for the street residents was discussed at Robinson’s Second Saturday meeting last Saturday where she met with her Third Ward constituents. The homeowners feel like the improvements are being forced on them and won’t have the same effect as the temporary barriers to through traffic.
She said that the issue has been discussed in joint meetings between the Woodmere and Averill Woods Neighborhood Associations.
The Starlight experience is a possible case study on traffic calming on city streets as more residents complain about neighborhood speeders and as the city budget tightens.
This is the first of two videos from the meeting. Please note: Click on the link to see the video. The link will take you to the video player where you can watch it. On this one Robinson describes the problem and the agreed on solution which was withdrawn.

The sidewalks are needed on Waverly ( and bike lanes). These “improvements” will only make drivers on Waverly think that this is a fast street good for a quick through!
Personally, I think that if the residents want to keep Starlight a low-volume street, a permanent barrier would be a better solution
since the street was not built originally as a cul-de-sac which would have kept it a quite street. .

Were you at the last Averill Woods Neighborhood Association meeting? Was it discussed there? Do you know if Starlight is still in the Averill Woods neighborhood? Wes

If it’s not in the Averill Woods neighborhood, where did it go?
Was I at the last meeting? No, I was unexpectly side-tracked by business that had to be taken care of, and no one told me what business was discussed.

From Saturday’s meeting, I gather that Starlight formed its own neighborhood association, Woodmere. But, because of the nature of these meetings, it’s hard to ask too many follow-up questions. So, I wasn’t able to confirm it. Perhaps, A’Lynne or somebody else can leave a comment giving some background.

Thanks for posting this, Wes. Starlight is in the Woodmere Neighborhood Association formed loooong before Averill. Woodmere encompasses the two SW blocks of our neighborhood Starlight and Waverly that are between Waverly and Averill. They’ve been working on this traffic issue SINCE 2001! They’ve been promised action for years and have seen no results. They’ve already done the studies and assessments and have complete agreement from the neighbors about the diverters. We just recently asked for a similar solution on Malibu for Averill. Bob Johnson was going to check into the past records to see what was promised and take action within 3 weeks. It sounds like the action is to do nothing. We’ll have to follow-up with this!!
