UPDATE: There will be a light meal served at 5:30 pm with the regular meeting starting at 6 pm.
If you live in Lansing’s (MI) southwest side Averill Woods neighborhood, then you’re invited to and needed at the next meeting of its neighborhood association which will be held at 6 pm, Thursday, July 23 at Trinity AME Church, 3500 W Holmes Rd.
The meeting is particularly important in the aftermath of a shooting at the Averill School playground and a shooting murder in the school’s neighborhood.
The association has been successful in drawing together neighborhood residents and other stakeholders including the Lansing Police Department and the Lansing School District to take proactive measures to improve the school’s safety footprint that involves an adjacent woods, as well as the playground.
As I get more details, I will share them here.
Important meeting: Averill Woods Neighborhood Association at Thursday, June 23
In this video, Lansing (MI) Council-member A’Lynne Robinson talks about neighborhood fireworks with her southside constituents at her monthly Second-Saturday meeting. She shared information about the city’s fireworks ordinance, the Lansing Police Department’s enforcement of it during this July 4th holiday and the number of complaints the city police received.
PLEASE NOTE: I will also publish a post later today or tomorrow about the discussion on how to deal with the growing number of complaints about illegal fireworks being set-off inside the city limits.
Starting at 10 a.m., this morning, Saturday, July 11, Lansing’s southside City Council-member A’Lynne Robinson will meet with residents for her monthly Second Saturday meeting.
A main item on the agenda will be a review of the city’s fireworks ordinance. This follows the July 4 holiday and citizen complaints about police response to fireworks usage in the neighborhoods.
She has other items of neighborhood concern on the agenda.
The meeting takes place in the meeting room at the Lansing Fire Department’s Station #6 on the corner of Jolly and Pleasant Grove.
In response to two shootings in the past month in the Averill Woods neighborhood on Lansing’s southwest side, a real-time Twitter group has been started for residents and appropriate city officials.
It’s an effective way for neighbors to get and give information relating to police and safety issues.
After signing up for a free Twitter account and after choosing to follow the Averillwoods group, then residents can get and send information from either their computer or their smartphone. As this neighborhood-driven project gets started, there will be neighborhood-driven tutorials answering questions.
Here are the first two steps: 1) go to www.twitter.com and sign-up for a free account. 2) Then go to www.twitter.com/averillwoods and look beneath the picture on the top left of an LPD officer and click Follow.
Come back to this site soon for more specific instructions.

Averill Woods Neighborhood Association President Melissa Quon Huber spokes with Lansing’s South Precinct Captain Teresa Szymanski today about the incident and shares these notes:
“Capt. Szymanski called early this morning. I missed the call but she updated me this afternoon. This is an open investigation so only basic information can be shared at this point.” From the conversation, she shares:
LPD was dispatched to Malibu & Rayborn to investigate possible gunshots. No victim was found.
However, a description of a suspicous vehicle was provided to officers.
An observant officer attempted to pull over a vehicle matching this description near MLK and Moores River but occupants of the car fled on foot.
One occupant was arrested at Moores River (in the presence of the Mayor attending a neighborhood meeting).
Another occupant was arrested early this morning at a South Lansing apartment complex.
The remaining occupant has been identified but is not yet in custody.
In the midst of this a fatality was reported at Frances Park, later determined to be connected to this case.
It has yet to be determined if this is connected to the previous shooting on Continental.
